The Combined Approach –
Not a treatment, not a course of treatment, but a treatment programme!
- A treatment?
Sometimes treatments in medicine are single events. An injection, for example, or a surgical operation. Treatment is often recommended at a visit to see a doctor. A prescription may be given.
- A course?
A course of treatment involves a treatment being followed over a period of time: such as a course of antibiotics. Otherwise some medical treatments are relatively continuous: treatment for high blood pressure, for example.
- A programme!
The Combined Approach to atopic eczema involves three levels of planned treatment in a particular sequence, followed for a certain number of weeks.

A sequence of assessment, treatment and follow-up is backed up by three additional considerations – attitude of self, attitude of others, and stress.
The Combined Approach to atopic eczema is successful because it is more than a treatment, or a course of treatment: it is a treatment programme.
As Dr Peter Norén says:
“Be consistent – all levels in The Combined Approach must be kept in mind for several weeks”
